Having retired at the age of 70 after serving 31 years as a trial judge in Honolulu's Criminal and Family courts, Judge Mike Town and his 26 year old son walked 200 miles of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
Judge Town is continuing to practice and teach through example, of the benefits of therapeutic, preventive and restorative justice and as a distinguished neutral in his mediation and conflict resolution practice at DPR Hawai'i.
The idea that jurists, lawyers and peacemakers can experience learning from my good and not so good experiences is of great interest to me. Mentoring to me is a journey of commitment between two people with a common goal, kind of like a pilgrimage. One has the age, skill set and experience to share and the other has a growth mindset and desire to learn as much as possible given the time together. It may only be a year or it may be a life time.
